NEW SEQ Level 2 in Teaching Swimming
This course is taught face to face, in person, at John Warner Sports Centre.
New SEQ Level 2 in Teaching Swimming
This course will develop your knowledge and ability as a swimming teacher and give you the skills to plan and deliver top quality swimming lessons. It is ideal for anyone interested in beginning a career in swimming teaching. No previous teaching experience is required, as your tutor will guide and support you in developing the knowledge and skills needed to become a qualified swimming teacher.
Pre-requirements
You need to be at least age 16 by the start date of this course.

You will need access to a laptop or desktop device with a webcam for the examination; it cannot be completed on a mobile device
Course delivery
This course will be delivered through a mixture of classroom, practical poolside learning and assessment activities, including an online multiple-choice question paper. You will have the opportunity to participate in the delivery of swimming lessons to gain practical experience alongside other practical opportunities during the course.
What the course covers
During the course, you will cover the following units:
- Unit 1: How to deliver swimming lessons within a safe environment
- Unit 2: Understand the knowledge required for teaching swimming
- Unit 3: The role of a Swimming Teacher
- Unit 4: Plan swimming lessons
- Unit 5: Deliver & evaluate swimming lessons
Course assessment
Throughout the course, your tutor will set assessment tasks for you to complete. You will then complete an online multiple-choice question paper to demonstrate your understanding of the theoretical aspects of the course.
You will also need to complete
- Six written lessons plans, with three being assessed by your tutor
- One scheme of work
- Practical delivery of at least six 30-minute swimming lessons
- A written self evaluation
- A written action plan
You will be given deadlines for submitting assessments and all deadlines will need to be met to meet the standard of the qualification. Some of the assessment tasks will need to be completed in your own time and prior to the delivery of your lessons on course.
At the beginning of the course, you will be invited to create an account on SEQ’s secure online portal
Once started, you will have one hour to complete all elements of the exam* and this must be completed in one sitting. To complete the exam, you will need access to a laptop or desktop device with a webcam; it cannot be completed on a mobile device
If the exam is not completed within seven days of the end of your course, a fee will be payable to SEQ to reopen the assessment
Next steps
Upon successfully meeting all assessment criteria, it will take six to eight weeks for your certificate to be issued. An electronic copy of your certificate will be emailed to you.
If, at the end of the course, you have not successfully met the qualification standard you will be provided with feedback and guidance on the reassessment process. You have 12 months from the start date of your chosen course to complete any remaining or outstanding elements of the qualification.
Level 2 course dates for 2026 are
- 11th 12th 18th 19th 25th 26th July 1st and 2nd August 2026
- 26th 27th 28th 29th 30th 31st October 2026
The cost for this course including all Swim England fees is £650.
Become a lifeguard with a National Pool Lifeguard Qualification course (NPLQ)
The next National Pool Lifeguard qualification course is TBC. Please register your interest. This course includes the AED qualification.
Lifeguards can enjoy a number of benefits: varied working hours, the experience of working within a team and the opportunity to progress within the leisure industry (most leisure managers start as pool lifeguards!).
Every candidate attending an NPLQ course must be aged 16 or more at the time of taking the NPLQ final assessment and be able to:
- jump or dive into deep water
- swim 50-metres in less than 60 seconds
- swim 100-metres continuously on their front and back in deep water
- tread water for 30-seconds
- surface dive to the floor of the pool
- climb out of the pool unaided without ladder or steps and where the pool design permits
The course includes the AED (Automated External Defibrillation) qualification.

PLEASE NOTE
The theory element of each course must be successfully completed before you can undertake the practical assessment. The theory section of the course is undertaken and assessed online using Microsoft Teams, led by a Swim England approved licensed tutor. Laptops/Macs/PCs should be used for the training – smart phones or tablets will not provide the functionality required.
